Learn Thermal Design and Control Strategies and Applications

NADCA’s 5-part webinar series on Thermal Design and Control covers the heat transfer principles behind engineering systems, from Fourier’s law of conduction to Newton’s law of cooling. Topics include steady-state and transient conduction, convection in various configurations, and applying analytical and numerical methods to real-world thermal problems. Participants will leave able to apply thermal control strategies to die casting challenges like die design and cooling line placement for water and oil systems.

Part 1: Introduction to Thermal Design and Control
This webinar will teach the fundamentals of heat transfer using conduction and Fourier's Law. Using this equation the student will apply the laws of conduction and will learn how to design and calculate a cooling line depth in a die cast die.
Date: October 27, 2026

Part 2: Heat Transfer Continued with Convection
This webinar will teach the fundamentals of convective heat transfer inside a cooling line. The student will learn about the convective film coefficient and how that affects thermal transfer into a cooling line. Several convection charts will be reviewed and we will start to understand advanced thermal conduction.
Date: October 28, 2026

Part 3: Combining Conduction and Convection for Thermal Analysis
This webinar will combine the conduction equations and the convection equations for a comprehensive equation to define the working depth and working length needed to remove heat from a die cast die. Several equations will be worked together for a complete understanding of the concept. Defining heat in terms of sensible heat and latent heat will also be reviewed. In addition, this section will also address heat removal from the die cast die by external sources like die spray.
Date: November 3, 2026

Part 4: Die Design Procedures for Cooling Line Placement
This webinar will review the design of a die casting and breaking that casting down into its many components. The heat input from each of those components will be calculated. Once the total heat input is determined, then the cooling line placement for depth and length can be calculated using formulas learned in earlier webinars.
Date: November 4, 2026

Part 5: Die Cooling Guidelines and Summary
This webinar wraps up the entire webinar series by reviewing guidelines for placement of cooling lines in the die cast die.
