Advancing Die Casting with Additive Manufacturing & 3D Printing: 4-Part Series

Over the past few years, additive manufacturing (AM) is becoming more commonly used for the fabrication of cavity inserts and other components used in die casting dies. This 4-part webinar series provides an overview of the additive manufacturing process and describes current and future applications of additive manufacturing for the production of dies.

Part 1: An Introduction to Additive Manufacturing - Part 1 of the 4-part webinar series introduces the additive manufacturing process, describes the five additive manufacturing processes used for the fabrication of metallic components, and introduces factors involved with process control and component qualification.
Date: June 17, 2025

Part 2: Practical Applications of Additive Manufacturing - Part 2 of the webinar series describes some of the benefits of fabricating die inserts by additive manufacturing, including conformal cooling, reduction in soldering, minimization of heat checking, cycle time reduction and reducing porosity. Other topics covered include the fabrication of bi-metallic cores, and using additive manufacturing for the repair of cavity inserts.

Part 3: Review of NADCA Published Papers I – Design and Steel Compositions - Parts 3 and 4 of the webinar series will summarize some of the more than 25 papers published at the NADCA Congress over the past few years regarding additive manufacturing. Part 3 will address both design of the AM inserts, along with characterizing the range of different steels used to produce the inserts. The design aspects will address layout of the conformal cooling lines, and provide some recommendations for ensuring suitable performance of the AM die inserts during die casting.
Date: June 23, 2025

Part 4: Review of NADCA Published Papers II – Failures of AM Die Inserts - A number of papers published by NADCA in the past few years have examined failed AM-fabricated die inserts, and characterized the reasons for the failures. Part 4 of the webinar series will review several of these papers, and discuss methods for optimizing the quality and performance of AM die inserts for die casting.
