China Shows Evidence Of Growing Domestic Demand
USA Today (7/14, Lynch) reports, "With American consumers tapped out in the wake of the financial crisis, China must rebalance its economy to rely more on its own domestic demand rather than exports to the United States. That will raise living standards here and eventually shrink the costly and controversial US trade deficit with China, which hit $22.3 billion in May, up from $17.5 billion in the same month last year." And "labor unrest in some coastal factories has led to a series of sharp wage increases that suggest the days of endless cheap Chinese labor may be drawing to a close." The general argument of the article is that the Chinese government maintains a very strong role in the economy and may even be increasing that role during the global economic crisis.

WPost: US Businesses Must Use Principle In Dealing With China. The Washington Post (7/14) editorializes on the renewal of Google's Internet content provider license in China. "For now, this decision by China marks the conclusion of the dance between the world's largest country and one of the Internet's largest companies that began in January with Chinese cyberattacks on the accounts of human rights activists and resulted in Google's decision to cease cooperating with Chinese censorship demands. Other businesses must take heed: It is possible to cling to principle while continuing to do business in China."

Microstructure-Property Relationships in Heat-Treated Aluminum High Pressure Die Castings: Recent Advances
Recent work within the CSIRO Light Metals Flagship in Australia has revealed heat treatment cycles for HPDC aluminum alloys that avoid the well-known problems associated with blistering and dimensional stability that arise during conventional heat treatment. Because of the ability to exploit age hardening, large improvements in tensile properties may be achieved as compared with the as-cast condition. In general, the 0.2% proof stress may be approximately doubled when compared to the as-cast condition, although the actual properties that result depend on the alloy, part geometry, wall thickness, its quality and the exact procedures utilized. The application of new heat treatment procedures has the potential to significantly expand the product range available to conventional HPDCs, such that they may compete favorably with permanent mold castings and some wrought aluminum products.
