Tips for Effective Communication

There are a few things you can do when you call a congressional office to make your interaction as effective and successful as possible. If you follow the tips below, you will be well on your way to making a difference for NADCA.

  • Identify yourself and where you are from – make sure you let them know that you are a constituent.
  • Be clear about your purpose for calling.
  • Mention the bill number and the issue that impacts your business as well as the action you are requesting.
  • Be organized. Have speaking points prepared before you place your call.
  • Be knowledgeable about your position as well as the opposition’s.
  • Be polite and firm, even if the staff member does not agree with your position. Let them know that you will follow up with another phone call later.
  • Do not make threats – you never know when you may need their support on later issues.

To be connected with your Senator or Congressman’s office, call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121.
