High-risk, High-value Energy Efficiency Research
Partnership
Facing intense competitive pressure, most metalcasters are unable to bear
the risk and cost associated with undertaking advanced technology research
and development. In response, a public-private partnership effectively
combining the technical and financial resources of industry, universities
and government was formed through the Department of Energy (DOE). The result
is the development of pre-competitive, energy efficient technologies that
are made available industry-wide.
NADCA’s activities are coordinated through the Cast Metals Coalition
(CMC), which also includes the American Foundry Society, and the Steel
Founders Society of America. Originally formed in 1988 to address the
research and technology needs of the industry, CMC represents approximately
80 percent of American metalcasters.
Active industry participation in cost-shared projects ensures the quick
application of research results to the plant floor and helps speed the pace
of technology transfer. At the same time, CMC’s emphasis on
university-based research exposes hundreds of students to the latest
advances in metalcasting technology and helps develop a well-educated,
well-trained workforce for the future.

Latest News from Washington:
President has recommended cutting the funding for the CMC metalcasting
research program from the $4.0 million in FY 2005 to $2 million in FY 2006.
Members of the House of Representatives and the Senate are working to
restore the funding to the FY 2005 levels.
