His industry experience started at the Ohio State University where he was involved in NADCA sponsored research through the ERC/NSM. Upon graduating in 1994, he worked as a process engineer at Contech in Dowagiac, MI. After a couple of years, he took on the role of project engineer at Premier Tool & Die Cast in Berrien Springs. In 2005, Premier opened their Tooling & Research Facility which Jeff managed. During the 5+ years at that facility Jeff was involved in the NADCA R&D Committee and Die Materials Committee contributing to many R&D projects until he left Premier in 2010.
He then started Global Mold Tech Management as an offshore mold base importer. So Jeff comes to us with a lot of hands on engineering experience in both the process and tooling sides of die casting industry as well experience in the offshore movement.
Mr. Cnossen has been employed at BuhlerPrince since 1984. In this time he has held many different positions including Electronics Technician, Machine Builder, Field Service Technician, Machine Runoff, Inside Sales and Service, and presently as a Technical Education Instructor. He has been involved with the Technical Education Program at BuhlerPrince since 1990 teaching Machine Mechanical Maintenance & Evaluation, Machine Hydraulics, Electrical Controls, Machine Operations, and Die Casting Process Control.
He holds an associate’s degree in Applied Arts and Sciences.
Dr. Rathindra (Babu) DasGupta
Dr. DasGupta is currently an adjunct professor, and a consultant for innovation and entrepreneurship activities. Prior to his current role, DasGupta served as a program director from June 2006 through April 2016 for various programs in the division of industrial innovation and partnerships at the National Science Foundation (NSF). Before joining NSF, DasGupta was the chief scientist for the CONTECH division of the SPX Corporation (1991-2006), and the technical director for Meta Mold division of AMCAST Corporation (1990-1991). Prior to joining the industry, DasGupta held various professorships at the Milwaukee School of Engineering, UW-Madison, UW-Milwaukee and Western Michigan University.
DasGupta has received multiple awards and honors including the Raymond D. Peters Endowed Professorship in Materials Science at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (1987-1990), the Inland Steel-Ryerson outstanding undergraduate teacher award at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (1985), the Herman H. Doehler Award from the North American Die Casting Association (2000) and the Innovation Award at CONTECH (1997). He had the honor of being the ASM-IIM visiting lecturer to India in 2000 and has been granted the title of NAI Fellow (2013). In the summer of 1985, DasGupta was also invited as a visiting scientist to China Steel Corporation in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
DasGupta has published numerous papers and presented at various international and domestic conferences, and he has five patents to his credit.
Beau A. Glim has recently joined the North American Die Casting Association as Project Manager. In this role he will coordinate research and development efforts between member companies, government agencies, government laboratories and universities; and correspond with the EPA on energy restrictions impacting the die casting industry.
Beau has joined NADCA after working for 7 years as a Design Engineer for Rexnord Aerospace in Downers Grove, IL. In his time at Rexnord Aerospace Beau designed mechanical seals for aerospace applications, managed designs through prototyping, assisted customer in resolving hardware issues on existing products and worked with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to obtain approval on aftermarket hardware.
Beau holds a B.S. degree in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN.
After his bachelor and master degree in Industrial Engineering at the University of Stuttgart (Germany), Martin started his career in 1995 in Germany and then in Spain at Behr GmbH & Co KG (heat exchangers, engine cooling, HVAC). In 2000 he joined Alcan Inc first in Markt Schwaben (Germany), where he was in charge of Sales and Engineering of their Engineered Shaped Products Division (Die Casting, Thixoforming, Forging). In 2003 he was transferred to Montreal (Canada) to take over the global market development for Alcan (later Rio Tinto Alcan - RTA), where he conducted market studies, launched new alloys, products and process technologies, and developed new international markets. He subsequently also held positions in Marketing and Product Management at RTA. During this time he became a recognized aluminum (and especially foundry/die casting) industry expert and speaker at many conferences and seminars around the globe.
Since 2012 he is working full time in his own company, Viami International Inc., where he works with a number of different producers of aluminum alloys, products (especially structural die castings) and process technologies in developing (international) markets, launching new products and process technologies, etc. He also offers consulting and training in sourcing of aluminum, equipment and technologies as well as process improvement. His company also represents various producers of innovative technologies in the aluminum/foundry/die casting sectors in Canada.
Dr. Medhat Khalil, Ph.D.
Medhat Khalil, Ph.D. is Director of Professional Education & Research Development at the Applied Technology Center, Milwaukee School of Engineering, Milwaukee, WI, USA. Medhat has consistently been working on his academic development through the years, starting from Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Mechanical Engineering in Cairo Egypt and proceeding with his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and Post-Doctoral Industrial Research Fellowship at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He has been certified and is a member of many institutions such as: Certified Fluid Power Hydraulic Specialist (CFPHS) by the International Fluid Power Society (IFPS); Certified Fluid Power Accredited Instructor (CFPAI) by the International Fluid Power Society (IFPS); Member of Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power (CCEFP); Listed Fluid Power Consultant by the National Fluid Power Association (NFPA); and Listed Professional Instructor by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Medhat has balanced academic and industrial experience. Medhat has a vast working experience in the field of Mechanical Engineering and more specifically hydraulics, having developed and taught fluid power system training courses for industry professionals, being quite aware of the technological developments in the field of fluid power and motion control and the production program of leading fluid power companies. In addition, Medhat has worked for several world-wide recognized industrial organizations such as Rexroth in Egypt and CAE in Canada. Medhat had designed several hydraulic systems and developed several analytical and educational software. Medhat also has considerable experience in modeling and simulation of dynamic systems using Matlab Simulink.
Dr. Stephen Midson
Dr. Steve Midson is president of The Midson Group, a Denver-based consulting company specializing in castings and materials. He has a Ph.D. in metallurgy from the University of Sheffield (UK) and 30 years casting and metallurgical experience, including serving as Chief Operating Officer of a commercial casting company, Director of a development and prototyping company, as well as working in the R&D labs for two Fortune 500 companies.
Midson is an Adjunct Professor at the Colorado School of Mines, where he teaches the undergraduate Foundry Metallurgy class. He is also a Senior Technical Advisor to the General Research Institute for Non-Ferrous Metals in Beijing, China.
Midson is chair of the NADCA Die Materials Committee, a member of the NADCA R&D Committee, and a member of the Semi-Solid International Scientific Committee. He has authored more than 50 technical papers, and has received awards from the North American Die Casting Association, the Society of Automotive Engineers, the American Foundry Society and Sheffield University.
R. Allen Miller
R. Allen Miller received the B.M.E. degree from Union College, the S.M. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Ph.D. degree in Control and Systems Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in 1966, 1967 and 1971 respectively. He has been with Ohio State since 1971, currently holding the rank of Professor Emeritus of Industrial and Systems Engineering. His research is in the areas of design for manufacture, die casting part and die design, and design environments for part and die/mold design including CAD/CAM/CAE integration.
Dr. Morris Murray
Dr. Murray has over 30 years of practical research in the die casting process, with three international industry awards. He has carried out training in HPDC and Gravity Die Casting in aluminum, zinc, magnesium, brass and other metals. He has designed parts for HPDC, Low Pressure and Gravity die casting using Finite Element Stress Analysis and designed runner/gating and cooling/heating for dies. Dr. Murray has carried out cost reduction and process optimization for die casting industry internationally. He specializes in rapid trouble shooting of light metal casting problems and technical and energy audits of companies.
Dr. David V. Neff
Dr. Neff holds a BS., MS, Metallurgy, Case Institute of Technology, Ph.D. Case Western Reserve University. He has over 40 years industrial experience in metal casting and supply industries to non-ferrous casters. Has presented over 70 presentations and technical papers published in technical forums worldwide. He has also authored several publications in Die Casting Engineer and NADCA Transactions. He has authored and is the instructor of, NADCA’s Metallurgy of Aluminum Die Casting Alloys and Metal Melting and Handling Courses and AFS/CMI courses in Practical Metallurgy, Introduction to Aluminum Casting and Aluminum Melting 201. In 2002 he received the American Foundry Society’s Scientific Merit Award. He has served AFS’ Aluminum Division chairs and Chair, Division Council and in 2014 received the AFS/Cast Metals Institute Director’s Award. He currently holds membership in NADCA, AFS, ASM International.
Dr. Schwam is a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Case Western Reserve University and Director of the Case Metal Casting Laboratory. Dr. Schwam has over thirty years of experience in theoretical and experimental investigations related to casting and solidification, heat treating, squeeze casting and welding. His recent research activities include energy efficiency studies, die casting and squeeze casting of aluminum and magnesium alloys, evaluation of die materials, rapid prototyping, welding and computer simulation of flow and solidification. He has published over 200 papers and technical publications and is a member of the North American Die Casting Association, American Foundry Society, American Society of Metals, American Welding Society and Laser Institute of America.
Stephen (Steve) P. Udvardy is the Director of Research, Education & Technology for the North American Die Casting Association where he has held this position for the past 17 years. His responsibilities include: coordinating research & development efforts between member companies, government agencies, government laboratories and universities; enhancing and implementing the NADCA educational program as well as instructing courses; further developing the level and quality of technology and information transfer between NADCA and its members; providing opportunities for enhancing competitiveness and profitability of members; and, responding to various inquiries from die casters, suppliers, designers and original equipment manufacturers.
Steve joined NADCA after serving 2 years as Vice President of Engineering & Technology for Teledyne Casting Service in La Porte, IN. This foundry is a producer of large gray and ductile iron castings.
Prior to his position at Teledyne, Steve managed the Materials Engineering Group and Materials Laboratory at Honeywell’s (formerly, AlliedSignal Aerospace Company) Aircraft Landing Systems in South Bend, IN where he spent 15 years. Aircraft Landing Systems is a manufacturer of aircraft wheels and brakes.
Steve holds both a B.S. and M.S. degree in Metallurgical Engineering & Materials Science from the University of Notre Dame.
