Understand Die Steel and Extend the Life of the Die


Die Steel – picking a good die steel for use in the die cast process, is only the first step in making that steel perform to its optimum potential. This 3 part series will review the types of steel used in making die cast dies. It will overview the #209-2018 steel specification guide for the selection of those steels.

This series will also review the steel structure, phase diagrams used in the formation of Iron-carbon tools steels, and isothermal transformation diagrams. Attendees will then understand how the properties obtained from the steel selection, heat treat, and tempering will produce a steel that is resistant to harsh properties of the die cast process. Therefore, improving the overall useful life of the die cast die.

Part 1: Types of Steel and Production Steel Processes - Learn about Steel Types and the specific uses of each type. Learn about various steels used for the construction of die cast dies. Overview of Steel Production processes including the P-ESR process, steel testing methodologies and Stress-Strain mechanical properties of steel.

Part 2: Steel Structure and Phase Diagrams - Learn about the crystalline structures of materials and the Iron-Carbon Phase Diagram. Learn how to read phase diagrams and the transformation from Liquid steel to the various types of steel phases. Learn how the cooling and quench rates effect the final steel formation and its mechanical properties.

Part 3: Steel Heat Treatment Processes and Improving Die Life - Learn about the Isothermal transformation diagram and steel formation thru the heat treat process. Finally tie it all together by reducing casting defects by selecting the steel and heat treatment to produce a die that will provide long life and resist the defects of the die cast process.
