Die Casting Process & Tooling Engineer (Lake Forest, CA)

The Die Casting Process and Tooling Engineer for the Dynacast Lake Forest, California plant provides direction and training to the production team on die cast processes, process parameters, and improvements. This position monitors and improves processes for manufacturing output, manufacturing process changes, and maximum work safety.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assists and directs die cast teams. 
  • Monitors daily production and conducts troubleshooting. 
  • Regularly collects data on die cast productivity rejects and machine efficiency. 
  • Provides engineering support to all areas of manufacturing by establishing optimum die casting parameters and conditions, implementing product designs changes, developing process improvements, and providing engineered solutions to product and process problems. 
  • Develops ad executes programs to improve productivity.
  • Reviews customer rejects, implements action to prevent recurrence, and meets with the customer to resolve problems if necessary.
  • Collects, reviews, and categorizes customer rejects.
  • Provides engineering support to die maintenance during die making, modification, and maintenance. Maintains die drawings to reflect engineering revisions. Establishes good working relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Ensures smooth start of production (SOP) on new products.
  • Participates in team working, information sharing, and continuous improvement programs.
  • Reviews thermal imaging, X-ray images, and CMM reports.
  • Maintains knowledge of flow analysis, overall die design, and principles of design.

    EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering preferred or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience acceptable
  • 5+ years of high pressure die casting required; 10+ years of high pressure die casting preferred
  • A self-motivated individual with a strong background in die casting, aluminum casting an asset
  • Proficient skills in die cast process and die cast related processes, such as CNC machining, tumbling, thermos deburr, tapping, etc. 
  • Proficient at troubleshooting die cast process problems
  • Proficient at troubleshooting die cast tooling issues
  • Ability to work with high level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • An understanding of good foundry process and metal handling
  • Background in true process engineering as it relates to high pressure casting
  • Knowledge and experience utilizing PQ2 and/or equivalent design software required
  • Analytical problem-solving methodology
  • Strong background in advanced quality planning and adherence to ISO quality system
  • Experience with continuous improvement, Lean, or Six Sigma a plus

    Die Casting Process Engineer (Elgin, IL)

    The Die Casting Process Engineer maximizes throughput, reduces costs, and improves quality of the die cast processes at the Dynacast Elgin, Illinois plant. This position develops and tests machinery and equipment in partnership with the production and engineering teams.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Reviews production process to ascertain compliance to the set parameters (instructions).  Establishes die set up and lay down parameters of production.  Continually examines the parameters to ascertain compliance with schedule.
  • Educates operators on tools and equipment.
  • Advises and partners with the engineering team on suggestions for tooling design, especially during the advanced quality planning process. (AQP).
  • Sets up and conducts tests of complete units and components under operational conditions. Investigates design proposals for improving equipment performance or other factors. Obtains data for development, standardization, and quality control.
  • Analyzes indicated and calculated test results in relation to design or rated specifications and test objectives. Modifies or adjusts equipment to meet specifications.
  • Records test procedures and results, numerical, and graphical data. Recommends changes in product or test method.  May recommend methods improvement for worker efficiency, reducing waste, utilities utilization, etc.
  • Performs statistical studies to develop process control tools (control charts, control limits, etc.) for critical job parameters.
  • Analyzes scrap and determines reason or root cause of problem.
  • Documents all die cast process changes for jobs owned.
  • Oversees the implementation, training, and operation of the “Shot Scope” monitoring system.
  • Ensures purchased aluminum alloys meet required specifications and monitors all aluminum furnaces.
  • Confers with management and engineering staff to implement plans and recommendations.

    EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
  • B.S. degree in Engineering preferred or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience acceptable
  • 3 – 5 years of experience and/or training with aluminum die cast processes required
  • Working and functional knowledge of shot monitoring and SPC and flow simulation software
  • Excellent analytical ability, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Proficient in computer software applications such as MS O365 and Pro E
  • Knowledge and use tools such as PQ2, NADCA theories and formulas, spreadsheets, and die cast process monitor to analyze dies cast job performance

    Senior Die Casting Process Engineer (Regional North America)

    The Senior Die Casting Process Engineer maximizes throughput, reduces costs, and improves quality of the die cast processes at Dynacast North American plants. This position facilitates innovation, uniform engineering, and technical support to the production teams.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develops and optimizes continuous production and manufacturing processes to achieve output, quality, and cost goals.
  • Designs, tests, and recommends improvements to the die cast processes to meet or exceed standards.
  • Develops and maintains, procedures, policies, and manual required to tighten process controls
  • Partners with the operational excellence team to support continuous improvement activities and process efficiency projects across North American plant.
  • Recommends changes to equipment, work methods, etc. to improve efficiency, resource utilization, and product quality.
  • Manage the process control, accessories, and electronic display screens for machine set-up.
  • Monitors and controls the die casting process.
  • Collaborates with the plant engineering and production teams to optimize machines.
  • Partners with the plant teams to reduce scrap through tighter process controls.
  • Acts as a knowledge resource and guide for the engineering and production teams.
  • Provides input on the expected capabilities and output of the plant die cast machines.
  • Educates personnel on troubleshooting processes and equipment.
  • Reviews designs to meet production targets and achieve process controls.
  • Participates in flow modeling reviews and supports first shot testing.
  • Collects production data and analyzes, documents, and diagrams production processes.
  • Analyzes data using standard scientific and statistical methods and recommends improvement measures.
  • Supports operational excellence and production teams in developing and implementing metrics.
  • Partners with the product design, program management, engineering, and production teams on process development to achieve the quoted production and quality targets for new or complex products.

    EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
  • B.S. degree in Engineering preferred or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience acceptable
  • 4-7 years of experience with aluminum and zinc die cast process required
  • Knowledge of creative problem-solving methods
  • Willingness to learn automotive-based process control systems
  • Strong verbal communication, technical writing, and presentation skills
  • Strong organizational and planning skills
  • Base knowledge of product development process and manufacturing methods and procedures
  • Proficient in computer software applications such as MS O365 and Pro E
  • Familiarity with Frech and Toshiba die casting machines preferred
  • Willingness to travel 50-70%, primarily in North America
