Metal Melting and Handling - Book

Description:
This edition has been substantially revised and updated with vital information on melting and melt processing to deliver high quality molten metal to the diecasting machine. There is discussion—much of it new--- on all chapters, including safety, alloy metallurgy including new information on structural alloys, furnaces and furnace practices (central melting reverbs, crucibles, and tower melters), and impurities. Discussion of metal treatment principles emphasizing fluxing, degassing, flux injection and filtration for better control of impurities required for high integrity/structural die castings has been expanded. The many techniques to evaluate molten metal quality have been included, especially newer concepts such as LIBS and Metal Vision, in addition to PreFil and PodFA. Best molten metal handling practices, and newer ladling and dosing furnace melt delivery techniques to the casting machine are also presented. Finally, a brief cause/effect relationship of those metallurgically-related casting defects that pertain to improper or insufficient melting and melt handling is included.
