Description:The share of electric and hybrid vehicles is growing dramatically, not only in North America. As automotive is the largest market segment for die casting, and engine blocks, transmission cases and oil pans are the three most important components in this sector, we need to have a close look at what will happen to them during this “electrification of the automotive industry”. While EVs obviously have no engine or transmission, hybrid vehicles at least have them, although smaller than conventional vehicles. So we will see less transmissions and engines, and more smaller ones, which will reduce the tonnage of die casting shipments in North America. At the same time we see a much greater need for lightweighting in vehicles that require heavy batteries, so a lot more opportunities for high integrity die castings either in the body structure, chassis, brackets, housings, etc. including large high voltage/battery housings.
