Metalcasters Go Green: Grant Goes to Green Manufacturing
A total of 270 metal-casting workers at five manufacturing companies in the Twin Cities, Mankato and Le Sueur
are going to get greener.
Under a $230,000 grant from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), Minnesota
Job Skills Partnership (MJSP) and Enterprise Minnesota, a nonprofit consulting business, will train the
employees in a three-phase, 32-month program.
The manufacturers are: Dotson Company, Mankato; Le Sueur Inc., Le Sueur; Smith Foundry, Minneapolis; and two
St. Paul-based firms: Pier Foundry & Pattern Shop, Inc. and St. Paul Brass & Aluminum Foundry.
“The five companies participating in the training grant will be able to make their operations more efficient
and lessen their environmental impacts,” said Dan McElroy, DEED commissioner and MJSP board chair.

Spartan Light Metal Products Achieves Million Employee Hour Safety Milestone
Sparta,IL – Spartan Light Metal Products facility in Sparta, IL has achieved the impressive safety milestone
of working one million hours without an accident resulting in lost time from work. This is especially
impressive in the die cast industry and is a rarity among die casters in the United States.
Spartan Light Metal Products contributes its success to their practice of viewing employees as its most
important asset and having a successful safety program across all Spartan facilities helps to demonstrate a
strong commitment to that view. Spartan continues to strive for ways to improve its strong focus on safety.
Employee commitment to a safe work environment has resulted in: a) a multi-year trend of improved safety
performance which is substantially lower than the industry average and b) the achievement of safety
milestones in all facilities. Below are a number of equally impressive milestones for Spartan facilities.
Mexico, MO: Over three hundred seventy five thousand hours worked without an accident resulting in lost time
from work.
Hannibal, MO: Two years without an incident that is considered recordable by the Occupational Health and
Safety Administration (OSHA) and 29 months without an accident resulting in lost time from work.
Congratulations to all Spartan Light Metal Products facilities and all of its associates for their
extraordinary safety accomplishments. SAFETY IS NO ACCIDENT.

Lean Transformation: Thinking, Learning & Experimenting for Today’s Complicated Operating System
Unfortunately, most organizations that have tried to implement lean have fallen short in their efforts. So,
since the first coining of the term “lean” based mainly on Toyota Business System principles two decades ago,
there have been some important lessons learned about how to head down the path of successful transformation
that we can pass to the next generation. To read more, click here to login and view this month’s issue of LINKS magazine.
