Who’ll Stop EPA from Regulating Greenhouse Gas Emissions?
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has joined a growing list of business groups hoping to stop EPA from regulating greenhouse gas emissions.

At issue is EPA’s “endangerment” finding, which cleared the way for the agency to use the powerful Clean Air Act to regulate carbon dioxide (CO2) and other global warming emissions.

The Chamber says EPA failed to consider the dire economic pain that its rules will inflict on industry, especially small businesses.

EPA already requires about 13,000 of the largest CO2 emitters to track and report their greenhouse gas emissions.

This spring, the agency intends to issue final rules that will limit CO2 tailpipe emissions from cars and trucks, large facilities, and power plants. EPA insists it will only target the very largest facilities, those releasing more than 25,000 tons a year of greenhouse gases.

Gauge Of Consumer Confidence Plummets
The AP (2/24, D'Innocenzio) reports, "Americans' confidence in the economy has suffered a sudden relapse, dimming hopes that they will start spending -- and spurring job growth -- any time soon." The AP adds that "the Consumer Confidence Index figures released Tuesday were much worse than analysts had expected," with the index falling "almost 11 points to 46 in February, down from a revised 56.5 in January and the lowest level since a 40.8 reading in April 2009." Bloomberg News (2/24, Willis) notes that "economists forecast the confidence index would decrease to 55 from a previously reported 55.9 January reading, according to the median of 68 projections in the Bloomberg survey. Estimates ranged from 50.9 to 59."

Newest Gating Software at Discounted Price until 4/1/10!
NADCA’s new Gating program has arrived. In an effort to make this software quickly available, NADCA has made it completely downloadable. This software program is intended to help the user develop the shape of the runner and gate system, and it will help the designing engineer quickly calculate and record the engineering data needed to properly design the gating system.

New features include:
• New and improved user interface requiring fewer clicks to produce gating designs faster
• Now Tangential Gate Geometries can be calculated
• Gates and runners can be drawn directly over a casting image
• Gate dimensions can be directly exported in comma delimited files and imported directly into Excel and solid modeling programs.

This exciting new software will be available for a discounted price of $200 until April 1st. To purchase or download a 30 day free trial of this software visit: www.diecasting.org.

Improved Tooling Performance with Advanced Die Materials
Over the years, catastrophic failures of die materials have become less common with advancements in steel making, heat treatment and technical advancements associated with the die casting process. NADCA has been a driving force for most, if not all, of these advancements. However, ongoing issues associated with tool life are still occurring. The range of failures is not associated with a particular die caster, material producer or a heat treatment facility. Impact toughness has been a focus of the North American die casting industry for several years, but how do these improvements relate to improved heat check resistance? To read more about additional mechanical and physical steel properties, besides toughness, that address the most common failure mode associated with thermal fatigue, click here to login and read this month’s issue of Die Casting Engineer.
