Harkin Announces Nearly $5 Million In Recovery Act Funds For Rural Iowa Businesses
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that two rural Iowa businesses have been approved for loan guarantees totaling $4,777,379. Schoon Construction of Cherokee and Northern Iowa Die Casting of Lake Park will use these funds to strengthen their business and keep jobs in Iowa. The funds are being provided through the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development's Business and Industry Guaranteed Loan Program and were funded in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Harkin worked to secure these funds through his role as a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, which wrote the Recovery Act. “In order for Iowa’s economy to grow and keep jobs in our state, we must support our local businesses,” said Harkin. “Today’s loans will allow these Iowa companies to remain strong, add to the local economy’s tax base and keep jobs in our state.”

The details of the loans are as follows: Schoon Construction in Cherokee (Cherokee County) has been guaranteed a loan of $3,325,000. The company earns most of their income from trenching and installing utility and fiber optic lines as well as installing farm tile, trucking and warehousing.

Today’s funding will help the company to grow, in addition to saving an estimated 61 jobs.

Northern Iowa Die Casting in Lake Park (Dickinson County) has been guaranteed a loan of $1,452,379. The company manufactures parts for a number of agricultural, commercial and recreational equipment manufacturers. Today’s funding will strengthen the company and save an estimated 82 jobs.

Cascade Die Casting Group Inc. in Sparta Plans to Hire Up to 8 Employees
SPARTA -- The Cascade Die Casting Group Inc. plant on Sparta Avenue plans to add five to eight employees after buying a new melt furnace.

The $469,000 furnace, delivered last week, will increase production of aluminum alloy products for the automotive, medical, electrical and other industries, company spokesman David Bowman said.

It also will use about half the natural gas as similar furnaces, including one at the plant that will be used much less now. The company recently gained new customers and developed new products, leading to the need for the furnace, Bowman said.

The company is applying to the state for a 12-year, 50 percent tax abatement, which the Village Council approved. Cascade Die also hopes for utility company credits for the fuel savings.

How to Maximize International Intellectual Property Protection
International competition is increasing daily. Competitors are quick to copy, and customers are looking for the best price. Brand name and personal relationships still carry some weight, but not as in years past. One way for U.S. manufacturers to compete effectively in today’s marketplace is by controlling innovation through intellectual property (IP). Given the international nature of business, IP protection should also be international and, to the extent cost effective, coextensive with a business’ current and future market presence.
