Ashok Leyland Launches Die Casting JV with Finnish Firm
Ashley Alteams, a 50:50 joint venture between Ashok Leyland and Finnish light cast metal components manufacturers Alteams OY has been inaugurated at Cheyyar, near Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu.

The new unit will produce aluminium high pressure die cast components for the automotive and telecommunication sectors. The facility’s initial annual capacity of 7000T will be enhanced to 10,000T progressively. The venture is expected to generate annual sales of Rs 180 crore that will rise to Rs 500 crore in five years with capacity expansion and value addition.

Ashley Alteams chairman R Seshasayee said, “HDPC technology is increasingly finding favour with the automotive and telecom industries, due to its high quality, weight efficiency and economy of higher volumes,” adding, “There is a huge potential for exports which we shall start to tap in our second year of operation.” Petteri Wallden of Alteams said, “With a partner like Ashok Leyland, we are well-equipped to capitalise upon the opportunities offered by both the telecom and the automotive sectors in India.” Ashley Alteams is a pioneer in aluminium die casting including die design, manufacturing, selection of high-end fully automatic casting, CNC machining cells and testing facilities.

Its customers include Ashok Leyland, Knorr Bremse and Cummins in the automobile segment, and Nokia Siemens Networks and Ericsson in the telecom field. Alteams OY is part of the Kuusakoski Group, that is at the forefront of the metal and scrap re-cycling business with a portfolio featuring raw material products, ferrous raw materials, recycled stainless steel products and non-ferrous and plastic products.

The Outlook for Aluminum and Zinc
It is been nearly 18 months since Lehman Brothers failed and the subsequent collapse in business and consumer confidence dragged the global economy into recession. The severity of the downturn prompted the governments and central banks of most of the world’s major economies to introduce a variety of measures to try to boost growth. The global recovery seems well underway, led by China and other developing world nations. The developed economies of the U.S., western Europe and Japan are also recovering, although the sustainability of their recovery is perhaps more open to question than in the developing world. However, the level of actual manufacturing activity in a number of major economies is still subdued. In the U.S., the latest data from the Federal Reserve shows that capacity utilization rates in many of the key metal-consuming sectors remain well below long-term historical averages.
