Factory Orders Increased One Percent in December
The AP (2/4) reported, "Orders to U.S. factories posted a big gain in December, far exceeding expectations and adding to evidence that the manufacturing sector is supporting the economic recovery." According to Commerce Department data published Thursday, "orders rose by 1 percent last month, double the 0.5 percent forecast by economists surveyed by Thomson Reuters. It was the eighth increase in the past nine months."

Bloomberg News (2/5, Schlisserman) notes that manufacturers are expected to "keep boosting production to limit further declines in inventories after a record drawdown last year. Computer disk drive-maker Seagate Technologies is among companies reporting stronger demand that may begin to generate confidence in the recovery." Economists predict "a 0.5 percent rise in orders after a previously reported 0.6 percent gain for November."

Macedonia Company Awarded $835,000 Grant
Macedonia — A local metal processing company has received close to $1 million in stimulus funding to make its operation more energy efficient.

Gov. Ted Strickland announced today that Empire Die Casting, of Macedonia, is one of 19 Ohio projects that will receive a share of more than $11.8 million in industry efficiency grant awards funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act’s State Energy Program.

Energy upgrades for Summit, Stark
GREEN: The buzz came through the conference room Monday morning at Kovatch Castings Inc. that Gov. Ted Strickland wouldn't be able to attend the news conference as previously announced because of the funeral of a fallen state trooper.

It was met with relative indifference by the 200 area business leaders, Kovatch Casting workers and local and state politicians.

The important thing was this: Stimulus money was coming. To view the rest of this article, click here.

Flow Science Announces Consultancy Agreement with AlchemCast
SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO: Flow Science, Inc. announced that it has entered into a cooperative agreement with AlchemCast, LLC to provide computational fluid dynamics (CFD) consultancy services in the iron and aluminum sand casting industry. AlchemCast assisted developers at Flow Science by providing empirical data necessary to validate FLOW-3D’s new core gas generation model and, under the new agreement, will continue to provide supporting data and advice in respect to further developments of FLOW-3D aimed at better serving foundries.

"This agreement will enable iron and aluminum foundries to more-easily benefit from CFD simulation methods, in order to design and produce their parts better and faster,” said Thomas S. Jensen, Flow Science’s president, ” and getting greater access to the expertise of the engineers at AlchemCast will be a huge plus for our development process.”

Taking Advantage of R&D Tax Credits during an Economic Downturn
During an economic downturn, manufacturing and other technology-oriented businesses may find themselves with underutilized employees and spare capacity due to falling order volumes and production decreases. This may be the optimal time for businesses to consider putting these assets to work by initiating new product development projects or implementing improvements to existing product lines so that the business can emerge stronger and better positioned when the economy does begin to grow. Both Federal and State governments may assist manufacturers in realizing this goal through the tax benefits available via the research and development tax credit.
