Obama Promotes Tax Cuts For Small Businesses To Prod Hiring
USA Today (1/29, Wolf) reports, "President Obama will promote tax
cuts for small businesses as he continues his renewed focus on job creation, but some of
the nation's job creators are dubious." The "idea is to prod companies to hire more
workers." Small businesses "also can raise wages or hours and be reimbursed for the
Social Security payroll taxes." The White House says the hope is that "tax cuts for
small business should lower the cost of hiring workers." But "business groups say the
credit won't do much to boost hiring." The NAM "is promoting its own job-creation
package, featuring a cut in corporate income tax rates and a more generous tax credit
for research and development. The group considers those changes more important than the
$5,000 tax credit." NAM Spokeswoman Erin Streeter said, "For those manufacturers who are
looking to hire, this will help. ... We don't anticipate this tax credit being a reason
for them to hire. Our members are going to hire if there is a long-term need."
The Washington Post (1/29, Fletcher) and Detroit News (1/29, Price, Shepardson) say the
President will propose using $33 billion for the program. But in another story, the Washington Post (1/29, Mui, Cho) says some small business owners
"worry it won't be enough to spur hiring."
The Christian Science Monitor (1/29,
Trumbull) reports the President also hopes to create two million jobs from exports, a
goal some economists say "is unrealistic." The New York Times (1/29, B1, Cooper) reports trade experts say "meeting
that goal would require the president to engage in a fight to the death with the liberal
wing of his own party, persuade China to allow its currency to appreciate 40 percent,
get global economic growth to outperform the salad days from 2003 to 2007, and lower
taxes for American companies that do business abroad."
NAM President Says Obama's Jobs Focus Must Be Followed By Congressional Action
Plant Engineering (1/29, Vavra) reports NAM
president John Engler said "President Obama's emphasis on jobs creation in the State of
the Union Speech Wednesday night must be followed by job-growth proposals in Congress,
including tax reductions for businesses." Engler said, "We commend the President for
focusing on jobs as we need to take immediate action to get Americans back to work. ...
We need policies that encourage job creation and help us to be more competitive in the
global economy. Government doesn't create jobs -- business does." Engler also said, "The
NAM submitted an economic analysis conducted by the respected Milken Institute that
shows more than 11 million jobs can be created in the U.S. in this decade alone by
reducing our corporate tax rate, establishing a better and permanent R&D tax credit,
modernizing the U.S. system of export controls and making investments in energy,
broadband and transportation infrastructure."
