Energy Efficiency Workshop: November 17
NADCA & CMETT Case Western Reserve University are sponsoring an Energy Efficiency
Workshop: Effects of Cap & Trade on Die Casting on November 17 at Mercury Marine in Fond
du Lac, Wi.
The event currently includes six presentations as well as a tour of Mercury Marine.
The keynote presentation, by NADCA’s project engineer Alex Monroe, is an Overview of the
Effects of Cap & Trade, Greenhouse Gas and Carbon Footprints on Die Casting. The
presentation will discuss the cap and trade bill — The American Clean Energy & Security
Act of 2009 — which was recently passed in the House of Representatives. The bill aims
at limiting the total greenhouse gas emissions throughout the United States to 42% below
2005 levels by 2020. As a result, energy costs will dramatically increase for all die
casters in the coming years. Energy efficiency programs in plants will be critical to
adapt to this tough legislation. This presentation will give an overview of this cap and
trade bill, identify the greenhouse gases emitted by die casters and address how to
calculate one’s carbon footprint in order to reduce energy costs.

Piston Made From Single Molded Casting
Some inventions cover new products. Other inventions cover how to make old products in a
new way.
This is now the case with engine pistons. A typical vehicle engine may have four, six or
eight pistons that move under force from exploding gasoline and air. These pistons
rotate a shaft, which is what ultimately turns the wheels.

An Alternative to Conventional Cleaning Methods is Dry Ice Blast Cleaning
Whether it's implementing lean manufacturing practices or following the 5S workplace
organization methodology, many companies around the world are looking for ways to do
more with less; less waste, less people, less space, less time and a smaller investment
in tools, equipment and inventory. We live in a world of just-in-time inventory and
manufacturing that is striving to help improve an organization's return on investment.
The concept of Lean Manufacturing has become a corporate culture and a way of doing
business that is having an impact on everything from costs of goods to jobs. The ability
to leverage the maximum output of equipment and people to produce high-quality products
faster, more economically and with less waste can also have a major impact on companies'
bottom lines.

Vendor Tooling: The Not So missing Link
It doesn’t take an experienced die caster long to understand that customer practices can
have a profound impact on die design, schedules, production and profitability of their
organization. To understand real-world OEM vendor tooling practices, the Harbour-Felax
Group spent more than seven months gathering data, interviewing OEMs and more than 50
suppliers and compiling the results to glean differences that matter. To read their

Michigan Lawmakers Call For Federal Aid To Manufacturing Sector
Detroit News (10/16,
Shepardson) reports, "Michigan's 17-member congressional delegation wants the Obama
administration to boost efforts to aid struggling auto suppliers and other
manufacturers." The News adds that "for more than three months, Michigan officials have
been trying unsuccessfully to convince the Obama administration to back at least $1
billion in aid from the Troubled Asset Relief Program to help auto suppliers diversify
into other industries," but "the Obama administration has repeatedly rejected the
efforts." In a letter last week to Geithner and White House economic adviser Larry
Summers, "the Michigan delegation urged them to back plans to 'create a fund to
accelerate production in new economy sectors, such as green energy, homeland security
and defense and medical devices.'"
