Has China Lost Its Cost Advantage in Die Casting?
In February of 2007, Technology Consulting Group (TCG) reported on the results of a year-long study for NADCA regarding buyers' opinions on the American die casting industry. This report remains available through NADCA as, Die Casting in the U.S. – The Buyer’s Perspective 2007. In that report, TCG predicted that within five years, American die casters serving the American market would be cost-competitive with Chinese sources. As part of that study, TCG asked American OEM buyers of die castings about the savings they achieved by sourcing castings from China. On average, on raw castings from China, the buyers they interviewed reported savings of approximately 21%. On machined castings, the savings averaged around 37%. At the OEMs they interviewed, these savings were enough to warrant importing raw and machined castings from China. Greater savings were available on the cost of dies and/or the cost of assembly.

Hitech produces patterns about one third faster with Delcam’s PowerMILL
With Delcam’s PowerMILL CAM system, Hitech Shapes and Designs is keeping its turnaround times low and its service quality high, helping assure success in a very competitive market. The company, a division of Seilkop Industries based in Cincinnati, Ohio, has been building foundry tooling since 1946. During that time, it has evolved from hand-crafted wood and metal patterns to its current CNC capabilities.

With its Delcam software, plus the excellent support from local reseller Design and Software, Hitech Shapes can offer its clients many ways to take time and cost out of foundry production. The company can ship machined prototype moulds within three or four weeks of receiving the customer’s CAD file. A big part of that quicker turnaround is due to PowerMILL.

EPA’s Addition of Amcast Industrial Corp Site to Hazardous Waste Superfund Due to 40 Year Old Lubricants
Amcast Industrial group located in Cedarburg, WI was an automotive supplier of aluminum die cast components. The company filed for bankruptcy in both 2004 and 2005. Since this time the EPA has added the entire site to the hazardous waste superfund list. Die casters should not have to worry about their site being added to the superfund list, because the contamination at Amcast occurred many years ago as a result of using polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB). PCBs are found in older formulations of hydraulic fluids and cutting and grinding oils. Since 1976 PCBs have been banned from use in the United States. The contamination in Cedarburg is not new and has been know for almost 40 years by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. More information on the EPA’s announcement can be found at EPA.gov.

2009 Transactions – Free to NADCA Members
Looking for a presentation or a paper from the 113th Metalcasting Congress? They are now available to all members in NADCA's Technical Archive.

Some NADCA members are unaware of this important resource that is available to them for free – the Technical Archive is a searchable and downloadable archive of DCE magazine articles, research reports and Transactions. By utilizing this search feature, die casting engineers can access more than a decade of information on innovation and success in the die casting industry. In fact, many member engineers frequently search this database to find answers their die casting questions and to solve problems.

NADCA members can access the archives by clicking here.
