Most Die Casters Below DHS Limits
The Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) responsibilities include developing and implementing a framework to regulate the security of high-risk chemical facilities. This framework involves listing chemicals of interest (COI) as well as screening limits. If a facility exceeds the screening limits for a COI then a top-screen assessment must be filled out and submitted. The assessment will then be used to determine if a significant threat is posed at that facility. If a threat is found then appropriate actions must be taken to minimize this risk.

Although die casters do not consider themselves chemical facilities, they utilize significant quantities of a number of chemicals. The primary COI that die casters must be aware of is propane. Under the DHS rules any facility that stores more than 60000 lbs of propane is exceeding the screening limit. To give an idea a forklift propane tank has a 45lb capacity. A one thousand gallon tanks hold roughly 4000 lbs of propane. An example of such a tank is shown in Figure 1. Roughly 15 of these tanks would be required to exceed the screening limit. An example of a tank that exceeds the limit is shown in Figure 2. This 18,000 gallon tank has a 67,000 lb capacity. Die casters should confirm that they do not exceed the DHS screening limit of propane.

A complete list of COI’s can be found at www.dhs.gov.

Ecoline – The New Machine Series
With Ecoline, the Buhler Die Casting business unit has rolled out a third machine type after the Carat and Evolution. Ecoline has been designed with the medium market in mind and is distinguished by its ruggedness and reliability.

Buhler has been manufacturing top-quality die casting systems since 1927. With its Carat and Evolution machine series, Buhler has up to now offered a range of equipment that catered especially to the manufacturers of cast components meeting elevated requirements in terms of quality, complexity, and flexibility.

PHB Using Global Permits, Savvy Buys
Zinc/Aluminum diecaster PHB Corp. said it is reaching beyond borders to cut costs for its customers in a way that sets it apart from other companies in its sector.

The Fairview, Pennsylvania-based company recently gained clearance under the US government's International Traffic In Arms Regulations (ITAR) to have components used in national security-sensitive technology manufactured at a facility in Malaysia, company officials told Platts this week.
