Cap & Trade Analysis Scheduled in Workshop
NADCA & CMETT Case Western Reserve University are sponsoring an Energy Efficiency Workshop: Effects of
Cap & Trade on Die Casting on Aug. 5 at Ryobi Die Casting in Shelbyville, IN.
The event includes eight presentations as well as a tour of Ryobi Die Casting.
The keynote presentation, by NADCA’s project engineer Alex Monroe, is an Overview of the Effects of
Cap & Trade, Greenhouse Gas and Carbon Footprints on Die Casting. The presentation will discuss the
cap and trade bill — The American Clean Energy & Security Act of 2009 — which was recently passed in
the House of Representatives. The bill aims at limiting the total Greenhouse Gas emissions throughout
the United States to 42% below 2005 levels by 2020. As a result, energy costs will dramatically
increase for all die casters in the coming years. Energy efficiency programs in plants will be
critical to adapt to this tough legislation. This presentation will give an overview of this cap and
trade bill, identify the Greenhouse Gases emitted by die casters and address how to calculate one’s
carbon footprint in order to reduce energy costs.
To register or for more information, visit www.diecasting.org/meetings. Registration deadline is July
24.
NADCA Offers Training on Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Greenhouse Gas regulations will affect all die casters because Greenhouse Gas emissions are
unavoidable in the die casting process. NADCA has created an online video training course
addressing Greenhouse Gas emissions by die casting facilities. Go through this course to learn about Greenhouse Gases sources, recent actions by
the EPA, proposed regulatory schemes, and ways to prepare for regulations. At the end of the training
the NADCA Carbon Dioxide Equivalent Emissions Estimate is available to
identify if you already are required to report Greenhouse Gas emissions.
Machine Safeguarding Seminar Helps Prevent Injuries
The NADCA Safety Committee recently identified, after reviewing die casting industry statistics, that
prevention of injuries to fingers, wrists and hands should be targeted. To help prevent these types
of injuries OSHA is providing a Machine Safeguarding Seminar. The one day seminar will address OSHA's
general requirements for machine safeguarding as outlined in Subpart O. Topics covered include: hazard
recognition, conducting risk assessments, advantages and limitations of machine guards and
safeguarding devices, and how to set up a machine guarding program to include preventative maintenance
and operator training. The Machine Safeguarding/ Amputation Hazards seminar will be held at EigerLab,
605 Fulton Avenue, Rockford, Illinois on August 4th from 7:30-10:00am and will be $25.00 with hot
breakfast included.
To register please email Kelli Elliott or call 815-965-3522.
NADCA Die Casting Industry Census Now Available
As the most current and collaborative report on the die cast industry and companies, this census will
prove to be of great value to all North American industry members. Divided in to four reports, this
document will allow readers to best charter the changes in the industry and better market to
end-market segments.
These comprehensive die casting industry findings include the most complete statistical results of the
NADCA Census, count of die casting companies, alloys cast, employment and additional services
provided; die casting shipments broken down by captive and custom; die casting machine estimates
including size and alloys produced; and an end-market analysis to assist with targeting and planning.
Corporate members get 50% off. Available in print or by download, the complete report is available to
corporate members for just $300, to individual members at $450 and non-members $600. Also available in
four sections at $100 each, $150 each and $200 each for each respective membership level.

Die Casting Technology for the Challenges of the Future
There are a few particular concerns that are currently occupying die casting foundries everyday, and
the solutions to these concernse are of crucial importance. Environmental awareness, low energy
consumption, work and process safety in particular, as well as absolute flexibility, are the
requirements of today's die casting industry. Improvements can be made in process management with
regard to the environment, energy consumption and safety, and new technologies are available which
allow for process controls that will increase efficiency and product quality. To read more about these
technologies in the July issue of Die Casting Engineer, click here to

Speakers & New Technology Needed for International Congress
NADCA is now
accepting abstracts for potential presentation at the 114th
Metalcasting Congress, held in conjunction with CastExpo'10.
Metalcasters, researchers and suppliers to the metalcasting
industry are encouraged to submit abstracts on new technologies,
procedures, equipment, products and other innovations that
contribute to enhanced productivity and quality. Especially
desired are papers relating practical experience and case
studies from casting personnel, and papers on metalcasting
management and marketing strategies. Abstracts are due August 20
and can be submitted via NADCA's paper system found through
www.castexpo.com.
CastExpo'10 will be held March 20-23 in Orlando, Florida.
