J.L. French files for Chapter 11
July 13 (Reuters) - J.L. French Automotive Castings Inc, a U.S. maker of aluminum die-cast auto parts,
filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Monday, saying it was "over-leveraged with an
unmanageable debt load."
In a filing with the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, the company listed both
estimated assets and estimated liabilities in the range of $100 million to $500 million.

Industries Honored for Being "Good Corporate Citizens"
WHITTIER, CA--(Marketwire - July 9, 2009) - Certificates of Recognition were sent to 408 companies by
the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County for being "good corporate citizens" for the year 2008.
These companies were consistent in their compliance with all their industrial wastewater discharge
requirements. They met their limits for wastewater discharge, were free from any notices of violation,
maintained their environmental equipment and fulfilled their permit requirements. Seventy-one of the
companies have received this recognition for the last five or more consecutive years.
"As far as we're concerned, the 408 industries receiving certificates are our model citizens," notes
Steve Maguin, Chief Engineer and General Manager of the Sanitation Districts. "We appreciate their
effort, particularly in these challenging economic times, because it makes our job of running a huge
wastewater collection and treatment system so much easier." Mr. Maguin announced the certificate
awardees at the meetings of the Boards of Directors of the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County.

Workshop on Carbon Footprint Scheduled
NADCA & CMETT Case Western Reserve University are sponsoring an Energy Efficiency Workshop: Effects of
Cap & Trade on Die Casting on Aug. 5 at Ryobi Die Casting in Shelbyville, IN.
The event includes eight presentations as well as a tour of Ryobi Die Casting.
The keynote presentation, by NADCA’s project engineer Alex Monroe, is an Overview of the Effects of
Cap & Trade, Greenhouse Gas and Carbon Footprints on Die Casting. The presentation will discuss the
cap and trade bill — The American Clean Energy & Security Act of 2009 — which was recently passed in
the House of Representatives. The bill aims at limiting the total Greenhouse Gas emissions throughout
the United States to 42% below 2005 levels by 2020. As a result, energy costs will dramatically
increase for all die casters in the coming years. Energy efficiency programs in plants will be
critical to adapt to this tough legislation. This presentation will give an overview of this cap and
trade bill, identify the Greenhouse Gases emitted by die casters and address how to calculate one’s
carbon footprint in order to reduce energy costs.

Registration deadline is July 24.
Advances in Robotic Casting Finishing
The basic design model of an industrial robot has changed very little over the last two decades. This
design is a six-axis, servo driven system of linkage arms. The dependability and performance has
continued to evolve and improve into a very reliable piece of equipment in the die casting
manufacturing environment. Like other solid state devices, robot controls have benefited from rapid
technological advances in microprocessors. Robot manufacturers have continued to develop powerful
programming tools with simpler, more user friendly human interface options. ABB’s development of a
six-axis force sensor and a very powerful ABB RobotWare Force Control (FC) program, has greatly
improved automated grinding and finishing of castings. Rimrock Corp. and ABB have worked together
several years on this new technology which is now available to all die casters and foundries. To read
about this technology in the July issue of Die Casting Engineer,
