Ford Motor: More Suppliers Ailing This Year, Slashes Number OK'd For Future Work
DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) — Ford Motor Co.'s top executive for auto parts purchasing said Wednesday the number of the automaker's suppliers that are under distress, bankruptcy protection or under observation has more than doubled in the last year.

Tony Brown, Ford's vice president for global purchasing, declined to give an exact number of distressed suppliers, but said in a briefing that more suppliers are in the category of being monitored as slumping auto sales force automakers to slow production and order fewer parts.

California Mulls Global Warming Fee On Industry
SACRAMENTO (AP) -- According to Samantha Young, Nearly three years after California adopted its landmark global warming law, the state is poised to impose the nation's first statewide carbon fee on utilities, oil refineries and other industries.

The money will go toward funding a regulatory bureaucracy that will oversee the law and ensure the state lowers its Greenhouse Gas emissions.

The California Air Resources Board on Thursday is expected to vote for the carbon fee, an action that comes as the state is mired in recession and experiencing its highest jobless rate -- 11.5 percent -- in modern times.

The timing of the air board's action has prompted concerns that the fee will impose yet another burden on California's businesses.

It would be imposed beginning in 2010 and would raise $51.2 million annually during its first three years, an amount that would level off at $36.2 million during the fifth year. The average cement plant would pay about $200,000 a year, while the average oil refinery would pay about $1.3 million a year.

NADCA Energy Efficiency of Melting and Holding Aluminum Workshop Announcement
On Wednesday August 5th, 2009 an Energy Efficiency of Melting and Holding Aluminum workshop will be held in Shelbyville, IN. This workshop will assist die casters in responding to pending cap and trade legislation as well as increasing energy costs. Co-sponsored by NADCA and CMETT Case Western Reserve University, the sessions will address critical issues such as cap & trade legislation, benchmarking energy use, high efficiency furnaces, and controlling energy costs. The half day of presentations will be presented by many industry experts and followed by a tour of Ryobi Die Casting. Registration costs $50 for NADCA Members and $100 Non-members. Either download or complete the registration form online.

NADCA Die Casting Industry Census Now Available
As the most current and collaborative report on the die cast industry and companies, this census will prove to be of great value to all North American industry members. Divided in to four reports, this document will allow readers to best charter the changes in the industry and better market to end-market segments.

These comprehensive die casting industry findings include the most complete statistical results of the NADCA Census, count of die casting companies, alloys cast, employment and additional services provided; die casting shipments broken down by captive and custom; die casting machine estimates including size and alloys produced; and an end-market analysis to assist with targeting and planning. Corporate members get 50% off. Available in print or by download, the complete report is available to corporate members for just $300, to individual members at $450 and non-members $600. Optimization of HPDC Process Using Flow Simulation
In 2006, CRP identified the need for an appropriate flow simulation tool to augment its team of design engineers for optimizing the high pressure die casting (HPDC) process. CRP undertook a detailed study through benchmark of various tools available and zeroed in on CFD software, for its accuracy, flexibility, ease of use, computational speed and excellent support. To read more about these case studies, where the flow simulation results helped in the HPDC optimization process, click here to view this featured article in the July issue of Die Casting Engineer.
