Manufacturing Ranked #1 Industry For Economic Prosperity
NEW YORK, June 9, 2009 - Despite more than a year of bad news as the manufacturing sector continues
to contract, a new annual index released today by Deloitte LLP and The Manufacturing Institute shows
that Americans view manufacturing as the most important industry for a strong national economy.
There is a wide perception gap, however, between the public's highly positive views of
manufacturing's contributions to America's economic success and their negative views about pursuing a
career in manufacturing.
The survey, Public Viewpoint on Manufacturing, which assessed public perceptions and understanding of
a wide range of issues related to manufacturing, shows that the majority of respondents (71 percent)
view manufacturing as a national priority with 59 percent agreeing that the United States
manufacturing industry effectively competes on a global scale. These results fall in line with
public perceptions that manufacturing plays a larger role in overall economic prosperity compared to
the technology, energy, healthcare, retail, communications and financial services industries.
Metal Suppliers Face Tough Choices
According to Corinna Petry, a handful of metal companies serving the automotive industry continue to
face tough choices on downsizing and consolidating operations, and one in particular is trying to
overcome obstacles in its reorganization effort.
Aluminum die-caster and steel forger Contech LLC, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection
Jan. 30, said that "recent attempts to sell all or portions of its casting business to raise

However, a $13.5-million purchase of Contech's six casting plants by private equity firm Revstone
Industries LLC could gain bankruptcy court approval very soon, according to Andre A. Augier, managing
director of Detroit investment bank W.Y. Campbell...

Congress To Vote On 'Cash For Clunkers' Plan
According to Ken Thomas of the Associated Press (6-9-09), Consumers
could receive rebates of up to $4,500 for turning in their gas-guzzling
cars and trucks for more fuel-efficient vehicles under a House proposal.
Thomas continued, President Barack Obama has urged Congress to approve
consumer incentives for new car purchases as part of the government's
efforts to reorganize General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC through the
bankruptcy courts.
The House proposal set for a floor vote is aimed at stimulating car
sales during a bleak period for the auto industry while increasing the
nation's fleet of cars that get more miles to the gallon, according to
the article.

Obama: Health Care Should Change
nadca Bay — President Barack Obama gave a stern message Thursday to a packed gymnasium at nadca Bay
Southwest High School: Do something soon to change the path of American health care or we'll all pay
a severe price.
In his first visit to Wisconsin since his election - and in his kick-off appearance outside
Washington in a major push for health reform - Obama called leaving things the way they are "the
nightmare scenario" because of what it would mean to individuals without good care, to businesses, to
the local and national economy, and to the federal budget.
