Metalcasting Congress Offers Attendees Technology Edge
More than 1,200 people attended the 113th Metalcasting Congress April 7-10 in Las Vegas, NV, to visit more than 170 exhibitors and to take part in the 44 technical sessions.

The event, which was at the Paris Las Vegas, was co-hosted by the North American Die Casting Association (NADCA) and the American Foundry Society (AFS).

“We had a better than expected attendance with more than 45 different die casters sending someone to the event. The mood in the industry seems to be improving,” said NADCA president Daniel L. Twarog. “The die casting Congress sessions were very well attended as the progressive companies are looking for the next technological edge over the rest of their competitors.”

The tabletop exhibits were open for two days during the congress, and feedback from exhibitors was positive. This year’s congress sessions revealed valuable research and technology and featured technical and management presentations. NADCA chose 25 papers to be presented along with three keynote presentations and more than seven success stories.

“We were pleasantly surprised with the attendance in spite of the current economic climate,” said NADCA director of research and education Steve Udvardy. “The advanced technology and cast materials sessions were of highest interest this year and presented great innovative technologies.” The 11 die casting sessions included topics of advanced technologies, plunger lubricants, cast materials, die materials, die maintenance & repair, energy & environment, computer modeling and die spray.

No Time To Sit Still – Be Part of Change at GAC
With the completion of another successful Metalcasting Congress comes another important event, one that affects the most fundamental areas of the die casting industry, fast approaches: The 2009 Metalcasting Industry Government Affairs Conference.

Held May 4-5 at the Capitol Hilton, Washington, D.C. this year’s conference will probably be one of the most important we will ever participate in. Some of the topics for discussion include the Employee Free Choice Act, Health Care Reform and Climate Change Legislation.

Meet and discuss the issues facing the die casting industry with legislators in Washington. Outline how they will impact your company and your employees and help shape legislation in D.C. Together we can accomplish more than we ever could on our own. It’s your industry – it’s your time to speak. Get involved.

Hotel reservation deadline has been extended through to Friday, April 17th. NADCA and AFS have once again partnered to offer Corporate Members a two-for-one conference registration rate. For more information or to register, click here to visit the Metalcasting Industry Government Affairs website.

China Calling for Global Monetary System
According the Associated Press, China is pushing for a new global currency controlled by the International Monetary Fund, stating that the current economy could be due to, "relying on one nation's currency for international payments." These statements were published in an essay by the Chinese central bank Governor Zhou Xiaochuan released prior to the G20 meeting earlier this month.

Zhou said the proposed new currency could be used for trade, investment, pricing commodities and corporate bookkeeping, as well as to base the international reserve. Russia has also called for reforms. President Barack Obama, U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke have all renounced the idea that the world should discontinue using the dollar as the world's main reserve currency.

Seven Strategies that Set the Tone for Safety
The safety orientation session can be an excellent opportunity to set the tone for workers’ employment, and to help workers understand both the importance of safety and the role they play in achieving a safe workplace. It doesn’t happen automatically or by accident. A well-organized orientation based on proven strategies is the most effective way to deliver messages to new workers.
