Serviceability: Increasing Product Life to Cut Waste

Scrap avoidance through increased product life is one of the most effective ways to reduce waste.

A designer should weigh the ability to disassemble and reassemble high strength die cast components, with product integrity maintained over their useful life, against the snap-fit capability of plastic.

The proven ability of a die cast product to be serviced and/or rebuilt can result in a doubling of its total life cycle.  Aluminum die cast brake-housing bodies, for example, can be remanufactured after 750,000 miles of service and reinstalled to perform for an additional 750,000 miles.
